The pasta, made in house, featured garganelli tossed with broccoli rabe and the same fennel sausage used on the pizza next door. It was well-executed, but I’d much rather eat that sausage on Stella Barra’s crust. For desserts, you can pluck something from the bakery case and have it topped with ice cream, but we loved the light-as-air pineapple sorbet.

That’s because the beauty of Summer House is only skin deep. Sure, the space is stunning and unlike anywhere else in Chicago, and sure, the servers look really cool with their colorful checked shirts, but dish after dish is merely okay. A salad of market greens and herbs was barely dressed, while a Hamachi tartare with avocado and green apple was appealing texturally, but didn’t have any zip. Grilled salmon, served with roasted fennel and arugula pesto, was overcooked.

So if you’ve always been a little fuzzy on pointers, read on for some real-world scenarios of where and how pointers are used. The first part starts with regular pointers, their basics and common pitfalls, and some general and microcontroller specific examples. But before you storm off to the comment section now, pointers are indeed a polarizing subject and are both C’s biggest strength, and its major source of problems.
Because they are typically unchecked, a pointer variable can be made to point to any arbitrary location, which can cause undesirable effects. Expressions before a sequence point are always evaluated before those after a sequence point. In the case of short-circuit evaluation, the second expression may not be evaluated depending on the result of the first expression. For example, in the expression (a() || b()), if the first argument evaluates to nonzero (true), the result of the entire expression cannot be anything else than true, so b() is not evaluated. Similarly, in the expression (a() && b()), if the first argument evaluates to zero (false), the result of the entire expression cannot be anything else than false, so b() is not evaluated.
Some compilers warn if an object with enumerated type is assigned a value that is not one of its constants. However, such an object can be assigned any values in the range of their compatible type, and enum constants can be used anywhere an integer is expected. For this reason, enum values are often used in place of preprocessor #define directives to create named constants.
The influence of The C Programming Language on programmers, a generation of whom first worked with C in universities and industry, has led many to accept the authors' programming style and conventions as recommended practice, if not normative practice. For example, the coding and formatting style of the programs presented in both editions of the book is often referred to as "K&R style" or the "One True Brace Style" and became the coding style used by convention in the source code for the Unix and Linux kernels. Appendix A, the reference manual, is not the standard, but our attempt to convey the essentials of the standard in a smaller space.
This syntax produces an array whose size is fixed until the end of the block. The largest allowed array subscript is therefore equal to the number of elements in the array minus 1. To illustrate this, consider an array a declared as having 10 elements; the first element would be a[0] and the last element would be a[9]. Contemporary C compilers include checks which may generate warnings to help identify many potential bugs.
Unix-like operating systems generally cannot function if the C library is erased. This is true for applications which are dynamically as opposed to statically linked. Further, the kernel itself (at least in the case of Linux) operates independently of any libraries. The most common C library is the C standard library, which is specified by the ISO and ANSI C standards and comes with every C implementation (implementations which target limited environments such as embedded systems may provide only a subset of the standard library). This library supports stream input and output, memory allocation, mathematics, character strings, and time values.
In void setArray(int array[static 4], int index, int value) the first parameter must be a pointer to the first element of an array of length at least 4. It is also possible to add qualifiers (const, volatile and restrict) to the pointer type that the array is converted to by putting them between the brackets. Structures, unions and arrays can be initialized in their declarations using an initializer list. Unless designators are used, the components of an initializer correspond with the elements in the order they are defined and stored, thus all preceding values must be provided before any particular element's value. The original C standard specified only minimal functions for operating with wide character strings; in 1995 the standard was modified to include much more extensive support, comparable to that for char strings. The relevant functions are mostly named after their char equivalents, with the addition of a "w" or the replacement of "str" with "wcs"; they are specified in , with containing wide-character classification and mapping functions.
A common alternative to wchar_t is to use a variable-width encoding, whereby a logical character may extend over multiple positions of the string. Variable-width strings may be encoded into literals verbatim, at the risk of confusing the compiler, or using numerical backslash escapes (e.g. "\xc3\xa9" for "é" in UTF-8). The UTF-8 encoding was specifically designed (under Plan 9) for compatibility with the standard library string functions; supporting features of the encoding include a lack of embedded nulls, no valid interpretations for subsequences, and trivial resynchronisation.

In between the seasons, she and and her husband moved to California, making it a little tough to show up in the Hamptons every weekend. We reopened our tab and ordered the Sicilian Highball, made with Cynar, Averna, ginger beer and lemon—basically a deeper, bitter, more delicious Moscow Mule. Then the bartender appeared with an orphaned sausage pizza, and asked if we wanted it. With help from the friendly group next to us, we demolished the pizza, which turned out to be the best thing we ate all night (the cookie took second place).

To calculate the Redfin Estimate, we combine hundreds of data points about the market, the neighborhood, and the home itself—all to provide you with the most accurate home-valuation tools. There are three main types of home valuation, and all might assign slightly different dollar amounts to the same house. For example, the same home may have an assessed value of $300K, an appraised value of $395K and a fair market value of $400K. We refresh Zestimates for all homes daily, but on rare occasions this schedule is interrupted by algorithmic changes or new analytical features. This allows you to see how a home (or an area) has changed in value over time.

Historical Zestimates only use information known prior to the date of that Zestimate. The amount of data we have for your home and homes in your area directly affects the Zestimate’s accuracy. If the data is incorrect or incomplete, update your home facts — this may affect your Zestimate. Fill the holes with wood putty and then let it dry out for a few hours. Apply a few coats of paint over the exterior of the planter to protect them from the weather elements (in case you don’t you cedar or redwood). Read the labels with attention and choose a product that is food safe. Finally, we dropped the plywood pieces in place and screwed them down with 1” drywall screws. There are tons of boards to cut here, so a length stop is invaluable.

So this week our theme is 2x4s and other structural lumber, because we LOVE getting creative with the strong and affordable common boards to make projects that are functional with some flair. But there’s no guarantee that they will fit well in your space. Consider this project if you want custom shelving that maximizes storage space in exchange for a potentially higher cost and time spent building. Bare minimum, I think you need a circular saw or jigsaw with straight edge, the Kreg pocket hole setup and a drill. We spent about $100 on 31 2x4s, $100 on five sheets of plywood, and $10 on pocket hole screws, for a total of about $210.

Using pocket hole screws makes this shelf build pretty easy. These fasteners are easy to use and help automatically keep everything square, which can be a challenge for new DIYers. Next, I had to figure out the width of each shelf unit. I divided the width of the entire space by three shelving units. This gave me a number that felt right for balancing open space against structural integrity, but I could have added or subtracted here if the width was too wide or too thin.
